The art of negotiation

I've never been good at negotiations. I've always been paranoid that the other person will eventually come out ahead. In the effort to do the "right thing", I usually lose sight of what actually makes sense.

I've been going back and forth with a friend on a project we're working on. After a difficult discussion, I was frustrated and confused about what I should do. Clarity struck and I decided to be honest. Set my ego and fears aside and talked openly.

Negotiating isn't a mind-game at all. It's 100% heart and 120% instinct. Honesty proves to be my best friend again.

I've read there is no such thing as a 'win-win' situation. I think you have to go for your own 'win' in order to be a successful negotiator. I'm not so sure there isn't something close to 'win-win,' some of the time, but many negotiations lack an easy win for both parties.

Sounds like you weren't negotiating, but debating or analyzing a particular decision in regards to your project.

Denver made a good point. Keep in mind, that it was a friend that you were negotiating with. In many situations, the person on the other side of negotiations is far from a friend, though not necessarily an enemy. At those times, the art of negotiation, though difficult, demoralizing, and for me, occasionally nausiating, requires finesse and strategy that "open-book" honesty doesn't provide. I am not suggesting lying, but if you're not careful, you can get stuck with the short end of the stick.

A couple of things I have heard :
"You can negotiate anything"
and
"Negotiating is the best thing you can do with your clothes on"
In the light of these words of...ahem...nevermind.
PS I think you can negotiate only for what you truly believe in. I guess thats where instinct and heart come in :)

Instinct? Yes. Heart? Maybe. Balls? Nuts? Cojones? Huevos? Breasts?!?! Definitely.

Addendum: After receiving a dozen anonymous threats, Lovetie has decided to take back everything Lovetie may have said that in any way, shape, or form disagreed with Apoorvi's honesty comment.
